Betrayed by D.B. Reynolds (Guest Post/Giveaway)

Please give a warm welcome to urban fantasy/paranormal romance author, D.B. Reynolds!

WHY VAMPIRES?

One of the questions I’m always asked as a writer is, “Why vampires?”  And my initial, gut reaction is, why not?  They’re all but immortal, they’re powerful, aggressive, totally alpha bad boys (and girls.)  And in my books, they’re forever young, gorgeous and great lovers. What’s not to like?

But the fact that the question gets asked tells me that not everyone shares my instinctive affection for them, so I sat down and asked myself … why vampires?

I read for the same reasons I go to movies. To escape. Not that my life is awful. Far from it.  I was raised in a very comfortable California neighborhood with five brothers and sisters and a mom and dad.  And now I’m happily married, living in a California canyon where I can watch the squirrels and coyotes and the occasional bobcat stroll through my backyard. But I like to imagine what else might be out there. When I hear a bump in the night—and there are a lot of those where I live—I like to imagine what it might be. Scares the heck out of me when I’m home alone, but what a rush! But, uh, that’s probably just me.

I try to take my readers into a place they’ll never visit in real life.  I want them to leave behind the grocery lists and the crying kids, the nasty boss and the over-filled inbox, the bills on the desk and the dust on the furniture. I want to take them someplace exciting and adventurous, to let them mingle for a while with sexy and powerful creatures, to feel the adrenaline rush of beating the bad guys and falling into bed with a gorgeous guy (or gal) afterwards.

So, why vampires?  Why werewolves and demons?  Because they take me away from the ordinary, they let me flirt with danger and let me pretend to be more than I am for just a little while.  And I hope that’s what they do for my readers, too.

BETRAYED is a “between the books” e-novella in my paranormal romance series, Vampires in America. LUCAS, Book 6, will release in October 2012.

A brief excerpt from BETRAYED:

Raphael slammed his mouth over hers, yanking her up against his body and tightening his arm around her waist to hold her there. Cyn fought briefly, mostly for form, he thought, as the always burning attraction between them grabbed hold of her just as it did him. She softened almost immediately, her mouth opening beneath his, her arms going around his neck as she crushed her breasts against his chest.

Raphael slid his fingers under the edge of her sweater and wrenched it upward, releasing her long enough to tug it over her head and throw it aside. He bent his head to her breasts, their soft, golden mounds swelling out of the lace cups of her bra. He sucked fiercely on one of her nipples through the lace, biting down hard enough that Cyn hissed, her fingernails scraping his skull where she held his head in place, arching forward to offer herself to his mouth.

Raphael ripped the front clasp of her bra open, his hands coming up to cup her breasts, his thumbs thrumming her nipples into rigid peaks.

“Take this off,” Cyn rasped, ripping at his sweater before her hands dropped to the snap on his jeans. “These, too,” she demanded.

Raphael laughed, delighted at her response to him. No matter how angry she was, no matter how angry he was, this was always there. This passion between them that threatened to burn them alive sometimes. This was something she had with no other male. He would never permit it, even if she desired it. She was his, now and always, and he would prove that to her once again tonight.

  4. Her explanation is almost exactly what I say when people ask me why I read about vampires. I used to read action and mystery crime books but frankly they became too realistic for me. My life is great but at the end of the day I want to escape a little. I love the action of the books but it doesn't cause me sleeplessness because it's not "real". Plus what's not to love about a sexy vampire :) Most of my friends don't get it so I love that authors and millions of other readers do! I don't need to win a copy of Betrayed because I've already bought it, read it and loved it! I'm waiting for Lucas now!

  9. Hi DB
You described why I read paranormal romance. Because of the romance in them, but also because the stories are "different" from my everyday routine. I still have to read Sophia and Duncan (yes I know, I'm a little behind in the series) but This story between Cyn and Raphael sounds very interesting.
    I enjoyed today's interview. Thanks!!

  11. I escape into books also. It constantly surprises me how I can read a book I thought I would never like and become so engrossed in it I can't put it down. I recently read a vampire book that I am going to have to give a five to. I never thought that would happen. It is that good. But that is the wonder of books. To surprise and amaze us.

I also read books and see movies to escape...if I'm not having a good day, you will find me curled in my bed with a cup of coffee and a good book!

  19. I totally agree! I love to get away and vampire certainly are part of everyday life so they provide a great escape.

A cousin of my husband who happens to be a great book lovin' friend of mine first told me about this series about a year ago. I went out and pick up the first one and ended up devouring them!
