Please give a warm welcome to author, Jennifer Apodaca!
What's it like to write using different pen names?
By Jennifer Apodaca
Last Valentine’s Day, my husband and I walked into a nice restaurant ready to have a great dinner together. The hostess smiled her welcome and asked what name the reservation was under.
Since I’d made the reservation, I answered, “It’s under Jennifer…” I trailed off unable to remember which name I’d used to make the reservation, Apodaca or Lyon.
My husband helped by breaking out into laughter. Once he recovered, he grinned at me and said, “Try Apodaca. You know the name I gave you when I put that ring on your finger and knew then that the rest of my life would be anything but boring.”
For the rest of the evening, he kept asking me which woman he was with; his wife, Jen Apodaca or his girlfriend, Jen Lyon.
And that’s what it’s like to write two series under two different names. It’s two times the work in maintaining two social media presences, including having two domain names for my websites and maintaining two Facebook Fan pages. For Twitter, I just use one account and label it Jennifer Lyon/Apodaca and no one seems to have trouble figuring it out.
So why am I doing it if it’s more work? That’s an easy answer: It’s out of respect for my readers. My Apodaca books are romantic and sexy, maybe even steamy. But my Lyon books are edgier and grittier. Readers have the right to choose what they wish to read. Many of my readers cross over between both names; some prefer one or the other. Using two different names just means I respect their choices and try to keep the two voices separate.
If you like sexy romances, hunky Marine heroes, and a compelling love story with a happily-ever-after, I hope you’ll give THE BABY BARGAIN by Jennifer Apodaca a try!
Now I just have to decide who I’ll be for my husband tonight; his wife, Jennifer Apodaca, or his girlfriend, Jennifer Lyon? Okay, maybe two names are twice the work, but I’m also having twice the fun!

About Jennifer:
Award winning author Jennifer Apodaca grew up in Southern California and met her very own hero at the dog pound. She worked there, he came in on a business, and it was puppy love. They married and had three wonderful sons.
While her husband worked on his master’s degree, Jen did the mom thing by day and went to college at night with the intention of perusing a marketing degree. But her true passion was writing. With time at a premium, she had to make a choice.
Choosing writing, and with the full support of her husband, she poured herself into her dream. A mere eight years later, she published her first book DATING CAN BE MURDER. In her career, Jen has written a fun and sexy mystery series and a variety of contemporary romances. Taking the pen name of Jennifer Lyon, she also created a dark, sizzling paranormal series, and most recently, The Plus One Chronicles, an emotional and sexy adult contemporary series.
Jen has achieved many of her dreams except for attaining a self-cleaning house, a latte delivery service, and finding the holy grail of nonfattening wine and chocolate. She can live with those disappointments as long as she can keep writing the stories she loves to share with readers.

ReplyDeleteTBB is a great read. Interesting characters with a cute kid and dogs. The killer plot doesn't hurt either. You will all enjoy!
I love a secret baby plot...adding this one to my wish-list that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteSecret baby stories are a great read as long as there's a HEA. Oh, and Jennifer, I REALLY miss the Wing Slayers.
ReplyDeleteThank you for such an amusing post. I asked my husband if he would mind it if I used a pen name for when I become published (not "if", because God knows I need to be positive). He was insulted that I would not want to use my married name. I, personally, am on the fance about it all.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer, you and your husband seem to have wonderful marriage and have fun together. Can't wait to read The Baby Bargain. Good luck with your two lives and writing careers.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer! I've read all of your work as Jennifer Lyon. I don't know why, but I always forget that you write as Jennifer Apodaca, too. Now that I've "pinned" the book cover, I won't forget to look for it the next time I'm at the bookstore!
ReplyDeleteI received this book as an ARC and wasn't sure how I would like it - I'm more into reading historical romances - it is great! Now I'm thinking about all the books I could buy for $50 :)
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of The Baby Bargain...can't wait to read it?
ReplyDeletelol after years of online gaming together it took a long time for my husband's friends to call me by my name and not my avatar's name so I totes get the confusion. :D

ReplyDeleteKaren Barr, yay! I'm thrilled that you added The Baby Bargain to your list!
Sebella Blue, I miss the Wing Slayers too!
Sandra Kenny, first, I believe that you will be published! Hang in there, it's tough but worth it. And second, my husband didn't like it when I took a pen name either. It just means they are proud of us!
Lori Thomas, thank you! We've been married a long time and have a lot of fun together.
Hichelle H, for awhile I wasn't actively writing under Apodaca, so you're not the only one who forgot. The Baby Bargain isn't in paperback yet, but I'm hoping that will happen!
ReplyDeleteDiana, wow thank you! That was a lovely compliment. Good luck on the contest!
Timitra, I hope you enjoy it!
Rhianna, yep, it's exactly like that :-)
How neat! Great post

In my family, you are your maiden name until you die. My mother's friends always called each other by their maiden names. Some were married over 50 years.
ReplyDeleteCant wait to read this book. Sounds like a great read.
