Today our guest has a medical background. She can sit you down, take your pulse, look down your throat and tell what is wrong with you. And she has just the right prescription, a paranormal romance: How to Date a Dragon.
Welcome Ashlyn Chase!
Ashlyn: Hi Lexi! Thanks for the confident intro. I’m not sure I could tell anyone what’s wrong, but you’ve got the prescription right. I believe laughter and love can cure a lot of the world’s ills.
Lexi: You were a RN for 20 years (or still are?); do you feel that the technical side of you is balanced out by your creative outlet?
Ashlyn: What technical side? LOL. I operate from the right side of my brain (the creative side) 99% of the time. As an RN, my creative side was frustrated. Nurses can ONLY follow doctor’s orders. No improvising, unless you like job hunting. That’s when I started writing. I took a screenwriting course and switched to a job on the night shift so I’d have more time to write. That plan backfired when they began taking night admissions. As a detox nurse, imagine how many drunks rolled in at 2 a.m. LOL. I was busier than ever! Then my parents passed away and left me enough money to pay off our mortgage. My husband (who I call Mr. Amazing) said he’d pay the smaller bills and let me write full time if I got rid of that pesky monthly mortgage payment—which I gladly did!
Lexi: I know you met your fair share of interesting patients. Any chance one of them inspired Dragon shapeshifter Drake?
Ashlyn: Nope. There are few things I take seriously, but I take the confidentiality of my patients very seriously. I took care of all kinds of fascinating people, some were even famous, but I never, ever, broke confidentiality…not even in fiction. I have been inspired by some bizarre situations, but I’ll put a totally different character in their shoes. i.e. Tonya from my first erotic romance, Heaving Bosoms. She had been married to a mobster and divorced him when he went to prison—then she had to disappear. True story. But my imagination took it one step further—what if she were found? Then my crazy-ass wild imagination took it about four steps further than that. What if she had half an offshore bank account number tattooed on her rear end? What if the mobster’s mistress had the other half? What if these two women hated each other? Now you can see where my mind goes with an ‘innocent’ beginning.
Lexi: How to Date a Dragon sounds exactly like the kind of book I need to pick up. Cute, full of paranormal elements (like dragons!!!) and a fun love story. What is your favorite thing about the Flirting with Fangs Trilogy?
Ashlyn: I’m so glad you asked. I love to have one omnipotent character in each book—someone that can’t be shut-up, and no one can do anything about them. Then I give that character an attitude and a snarky sense of humor. What you get is raw, in-your-face hilarious truth that the others characters are forced to deal with. In the Strange Neighbors trilogy, it was Chad, the ghost. In Flirting with Fangs, it’s Gaia--Mother Nature herself! (And you wouldn’t believe how much she hates it when people try to fool Mother Nature!)
Lexi: Would you care to divulge who book three will be about? Do we get to meet book 3’s hero and heroine in How to Date a Dragon? We promise there are no HIPPA violations in sharing this information.
Ashlyn: LOL. Of course. You can let go of my arm now. In both books 1 and 2 you’ll meet the bar owner vampire Anthony and his human manager Claudia. They’ve been secretly in love with each other for 5 years, but they’re afraid of what Anthony’s ex-girlfriend would do if she found out. Ruxandra is a spoiled, hot-tempered vampire who refuses to let go of Anthony no matter how many times he tells her it’s over. Both Claudia and Anthony have carefully guarded this secret infatuation, even from each other! But when it comes out, there’s no taking it back.
Lexi: This series is new to me, but now I am excited to go find book one and read them back to back! Thanks for stopping by Ashlyn, and thanks for being so much fun! You are a breath of fresh air! Congrats on your new release!
Ashlyn: Thanks for the fun interview, Lexi. I always appreciate a chance to reach new readers. I hope you (and they) enjoy my wacky imagination!
