Favorite sports team?
I’m not too rabid about any sports, but the Colorado Avalanche is probably my favorite team. Although I’m not that hockey-literate, I do love to watch it. It might be because of my dormant violent streak.
Favorite reality show?
I don’t want to be that person who talks at length about their vegan and pesticide-free lifestyle and then declares with smug self-righteousness, “I don’t watch TV,” but…um, I don’t watch TV. I do eat meat, though, and I probably ingest more chemicals than are good for me, if that helps dilute the smugness.
The TV-free thing started a couple of years ago in the dark of winter when my old wind turbine broke down around the same time that my propane generator stopped working. Since the installers and the repair guy couldn’t make it through the snow to put up a new wind turbine and/or fix my generator, my only source for power was my PV solar panels. The nights were very long and very dark. I started doing anything that required electricity during daylight hours (charging my laptop, etc.) and then unplugging everything except the fridge in the evenings. At night, I’d use candles for light and write on my laptop until the depleted battery told me to stop. Then I’d go to bed. During that time, I just got out of the habit of watching TV.
I used to love “Project Runway,” though—is that still on? I’m hopelessly out of the television loop.
What have you always wanted to do, but never done?
I really would like to travel more. Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Botswana…there are so many places I haven’t seen yet, but I’m determined to change that.

That’s why Callum, the surly and haunted leader of the close-knit Search and Rescue brotherhood, finds it so hard to let newcomer Louise “Lou” Sparks into his life. But when these rescue divers go face-to-face with a killer, Callum may find that more than his heart is on the line ...
About Katie:
When she’s not writing, Katie Ruggle rides horses, shoots guns, and travels to warm places where she can SCUBA dive. Graduating from the Police Academy, Katie received her ice-rescue certification and can attest that the reservoirs in the Colorado mountains really are that cold. While she still misses her off-grid, solar- and wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains, she now lives in Rochester, Minnesota near her family.
