We are lucky to have a return guest today! She writes stories about falling in love and has a sommelier son so she fits in perfectly at Reading Between the Wines. Welcome back Gayle Callen!
Thanks so much for having me today, Lexi!
Lexi: I’m so excited to have you back and am glad to see that the distractions from working at home haven’t won out and you have a new release! The Groom Wore Plaid sounds amazing and I love the cover! Does the front match what you pictured for Maggie and Owen?
I LOVE the Scottish background. And Maggie definitely works for me. Owen is close—I think I pictured him a little leaner, but I’m not complaining! ;)
Lexi: I love historical romance and even though I read across genres I always come back to HR and especially highlander ones. Do you still imbibe in mysteries while driving around or did you surround yourself with Scotland while writing this one?
For the first time, I came up with a Scottish instrumental playlist, that I used when I plotted this trilogy. But that’s not books, of course. I still like to read all kinds of things, so I went between Scotland, and non-fiction written by some of our favorite comediennes, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and also some great mysteries! ;)
Lexi: I’m ready to jump back into the Highland Weddings series and get a good dose of Highlanders. I’m also hoping that you can tell us how many books are planned for this series? You’re on a roll so let’s aim for a high number!
So far “Highland Weddings” is a trilogy. Since I haven’t written the third book yet, I don’t really know what’s beyond it, but I’m enjoying Scotland, so I think I’m going to set the next historical trilogy there as well. It’s a fresh, interesting challenge after 6 medievals and 15 Victorians! (I’ve also published 6 contemporaries as Emma Cane)
Lexi: February 23rd, a good day for a book birthday. I’ll pour you some wine and we can toast each book birthday you can name. Sound good?
I can’t name the actual birthdays for all of my books, sorry! But they’re always the last Tuesday of the month. Ha! And if you want me to name the actual books, after seventeen years of publishing, we’d get pretty tipsy toasting and drinking to each one, since there are 36 of them. But thank you!
Lexi: Ok, I give. Another high number! One I am very glad is increasing. Congrats on the release of The Groom Wore Plaid and I hope to see you again and I will ask if you have ever asked your son to match a wine with one of your books! Thank you, Gayle!
Thanks so much, Lexi! I enjoyed myself.

Falling in love means tempting fate in this passionate new novel in USA Today bestselling author Gayle Callen's Highland Weddings series.
Maggie McCallum's dreams about her new fiancé aren't the romantic sort. It's not just that she was bartered to Owen Duff like a piece of property to end a clan feud. She's also haunted by premonitions of his death on their upcoming wedding day. Yet the exasperating Highlander won't let her call it off, even though his life and his clan are both in jeopardy.
Owen has wanted Maggie in his bed since he first glimpsed her years ago. If their union restores peace between their clans, so much the better. But while lusting after another chief's sister had its risks, growing to trust Maggie is far more dangerous. Owen is falling deeply in love with the one woman he cannot hope to claim . . . and survive.
Don't miss Book One in the, Highland Weddings series!
