Dianne Duvall’s Broken Dawn epitomizes excitement, passion and risky business from the get-go. It’s the tenth installment in Dianne’s amazing Immortal Guardians (IG) paranormal romance series, but Broken Dawn works well as a standalone, too. If you are a newbie, the IG universe is populated with powerful and sexy immortal males who fall for strong women. Just know that once you dive in to one of these IG books, you will be soundly hooked and embarking on a mission to read all of them.

The previous books took place mostly in North Carolina. Broken Dawn breaks new ground as it takes place almost entirely in Houston, Texas. But, have no fear if you’re an IGs’ fan. Many of your beloved IGs from North Carolina make appearances in this episode.

This is Nick’s and Kayla’s story. Nick is an IG who has been smitten with Kayla, a single-mom, ever since she moved in next-door six years ago. He’d love to ask her out, but as an IG, his life is devoted to protecting the human race by killing vampires that the humans are blissfully unaware of. In addition, Nick worries about putting Kayla or her daughter in danger if he revealed his feelings. Unknown to Nick, Kayla has been crushing on her hot neighbor almost as long as he has loved her. But, when a different enemy surfaces putting Kayla’s life in mortal danger, Nick calls in his North Carolina brethren for backup. I love how the IGs are like one big family. I liked both Nick and Kayla and enjoyed every moment of seeing them overcome the odds to be together.

“He nodded toward her house. “Can I talk you into sharing a snack with me while we watch a movie or something for a bit? I know you need to go to bed soon, but I’d love to spend some time with you first. I promise to keep my hands to myself.”

Stepping back, she shook her head with mock disappointment. “I was going to say yes… but then you blew it with the hands thing.”

He chuckled. “And if I promise not to keep my hands to myself?”

Crossing to the back door, she opened it and offered him a dramatic bow. “Step inside, my dear sir.”

“Oh sure. You can laugh,” Eliana grumbled as she took it. “You have Kayla.”

He winced. “Not yet, I don’t. There’s a goodly chance I’m going to bungle things with her. Badly.” He gestured to the vampires on the ground around them. “She doesn’t even know about this aspect of my life. And I don’t know how to tell her. What woman wouldn’t flee from a man who claims he hunts and kills vampires for a living?”

“A strong one,” she retorted, the words a little muffled as she wiped her face clean. “And Kayla is ballsy. I knew it as soon as I met her.”

He smiled. “She is. Strong women are so hot.”

“Some of the hunger in her gaze receded as uncertainty crept in.

“What is it?”

She bit her lip. “My breasts aren’t what they used to be.”

He glanced at her gorgeous breasts, then met her gaze again. “What did they used to be?”

She laughed, some of the sudden awkwardness leaving her. “Perkier. Pregnancy and breastfeeding changed them.”

He stared at her breasts. “Then thank you, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Because I love your breasts.”

A key supporting player in Broken Dawn, Eliana, a female IG, was a supporting player in The Lasaran and is Nick’s hunting partner in Broken Dawn. She will be the focus of The Segonian, the second installment in Dianne’s Aldebarian Alliance series – a spin-off from the IG world. A preview to Eliana’s book is the teaser included at the end of both Broken Dawn and The Lasaran. I’ve now read it twice – and I rarely read previews preferring to wait for the whole story. From the preview, there’s no doubt that The Segonian is going to be an earth-shattering, mind-blowing read. I am waiting with bated breath and hope it comes SOON!

Broken Dawn didn’t feel as fast-paced as its predecessors, but it’s the perfect, refreshing breather with the optimum amounts of heart-in-your-throat suspense and brouhaha. It will certainly keep you flipping the pages well past your bedtime. I can attest to this as I was a walking zombie for three days following the book’s release. It mixes kickass action with plenty of humor, heated passion and sweet romance. Broken Dawn is delicious reading and an awesome addition to the IG world.
