The Terra Haven Chronicles: feeding my love of those stone monsters that all began with the animated television series Gargoyles!!
I've said it before and I'll say it again—there needs to be more books with gargoyles in them! Which is why I was ecstatic to learn that Chastain was beginning another series within her Terra Haven world! We met Kylie in the Gargoyle Guardian Chronicles, but if you're unfamiliar—no worries. You'll be swept up in Kylie's story and the magical world she lives in from page one.
Kylie is a journalist and her lion-like gargoyle partner, Quinn, is never far away to give her elemental power a boost. They're waiting at the base of the everlasting tree, a tree that blooms once a century or so and grants one answer to a question per person. Kylie is busy interviewing when the captain of the FPD, Federal Pentagon Defense—who also happens to be Kylie's crush—Grant shows up. He greets her like a little kid, much to her frustration, but then the tree started to open.
The tree gifted seeds, answers to the questions asked, and Kylie's looks like a firebird feather. Once back in Terra Haven she and Quinn hunt down any leads they can about a missing shipment of firebirds. But their questioning is interrupted by the appearance of Zipporah the harpy who picks up Kylie and drops her at the top of a canyon that's known as Lunacy Labyrinth Kylie's sure she's going to die there, trying to find a special rock for the harpy, when Grant sends an elemental message to her.
For him to send a water message he has to be close, but he's off investigating a murder so what's he doing in the same canyon as Kylie?
So Kylie and Grant, along with his FPD team and the gargoyle Quinn venture into the labyrinth to uncover the mystery of the firebirds, murder, and what's hiding inside. Chastain's magical world is so much fun to read about and Kylie and Grant's romance is a fun slow burn, even if their relationship is incredibly similar to Mika and Marcus's. If you're in the mood for an Urban Fantasy with gargoyles you should defiantly pick this one up, or start from the beginning with Mika's trilogy!
